The goal of the Music Department of Payap University is to offer a musical education of the highest possible quality taught by qualified professors from Thailand and abroad and to have quality graduates who will help to raise the standard of music in Thailand.
Goals:
•To develop individual professional excellence
•To raise the musical standard in Thailand
•To create new knowledge through research

Entrance Requirements
  •A Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent
  •Music Education majors must have Bachelor’s degree in music or have at least one year’s teaching experience
  •Ethnomusicology majors must have a Bachelor’s degree in music or in a field somehow related to ethnomusicology
  •Composition majors must submit at least two compositions and be able to play an instrument at intermediate level
  •Performance majors must be able to perform advanced repertoire
  •All applicants must take qualifying exams in Music Theory, Music History, and Ear Training
Note: All candidates must meet the above requirements.  The admission committee has the right to make the final decision
Application
All candidates must submit an application form and choose one or more of the following majors:
1.Music Education
2.Ethnomusicology
3.Composition
4.Performance (Piano, Clarinet, Guitar, and Harp only)

Composition majors must also submit:
1.A Portfolio
2.Two original compositions (with different instrumentation), with or without sound files

Entrance Examinations
1.English
2.Music theory, Music history and Ear Training
3.Interview
4.Composition majors will have to perform one intermediate level piece on any instrument with accompaniment, if necessary (accompanist to be provided by the applicant).
5.Performance majors must perform advance repertoire
a.Piano majors must play three works of their own choice from three different periods
b.Clarinet majors must play:
    i.One fast movement from a concerto
    ii.One fast movement from a Romantic period sonata
    iii.One slow movement from a concerto or Romantic sonata
(Applicant must supply his/her own accompanist.)
c.Guitar majors must play:
    i.One study by Villa-Lobos
    ii.One piece from the Renaissance or Baroque periods
    iii.One piece from the Romantic period
d.Harp majors must play:
    i.One movement from the following works:
1.Handel: Concerto in Bb
2.Mozart: Concerto for Flute and Harp
3.Debussy: Danses Sacre et Profane
    ii.A 20th century work originally composed for harp. (Separate piece or one movement of a sonata).
All candidates for the MA degree must meet the following requirements before the degree will be granted:
• Residency of two academic years, or the equivalent, but not over 10 semesters from his or her first registration
• Completion of Music Department course requirements
• A minimum G.P.A of 3.00 and at least the letter grade B in the courses
• Completion of Music Department comprehensive examination
• Music Education and Ethnomusicology majors must have their thesis printed in an academic journal or presented at an academic conference
• Composition majors must submit three original compositions, with different instrumentation, and at least 6 minutes in length
• Performance majors must perform a recital and complete an independent study project

Students who did not pass qualifying exams in music theory, music history,  and ear training, must take the overview courses.  These courses are not credited towards the Master’s degree.  They are offered for students who need review work.  The courses must be taken in the first semester.  The overview courses are:

Intensive course covering all the basic aural skills, such as rhythmic and melodic dictation in simple time and compound time, notating and singing intervals, triads, cadences, and chord progressions

A course studying religious ethics as they relate to teaching music.  Guidelines for the music teacher.  Case studies from the present

MU612 Psychology of Music Teaching   3(3-0-3) credits
Educational psychology as applied to music teaching.  Methods of teaching that are appropriate to the personal development of children and adolescents

MU613 Curriculum and Instruction of Music Education  3(3-0-3) credits
This course focuses on the role of the teacher in planning music curriculums. The basic principles and concepts for planning are related to learning objectives that comprise a teaching unit. Attention is given to the selection and application of teaching methodologies and materials in curriculum design. Students will conduct a need analysis and create effective assessment strategies.

MU 651 Western Music Literature   2(2-0-1) credits
Study the history and literature of Western music from the Baroque period to the 20th century, including the study of form and other elements of the music of the 20th century’s most important composers.

MU663 Instrumental Skills    2(1-2-4) credits
The study and practice of a selected musical instrument.

MU799 Thesis     12 credits
Supervised writing of a research paper on a theoretical or practical topic.  The paper must be presented to an examining committee.

Ethnomusicology Courses
MU 621 Ethnomusicology   3(3-0-9) credits
Study the basic methods of ethnomusicology, including cataloging instruments and analyzing the structure, sound, scales, and tunings, of music from various cultures.  How to collect data and conduct.

MU 622 World Music    2(2-0-4) credits 
A survey of music from a variety of the world’s cultures.  The concepts that bind musical culture to society and economics.

MU 623 World Music Analysis   (2-0-4) credits
The basic structures of music from different parts of the world, including theoretical analysis and aspects and technique of transcription.

MU 624 Asian Music    (2-0-4) credits
A survey of music from Asia and the relationship of this music culture, folk art, religion, and society.

MU 721 Field Study    3(1-4-10) credits
Research in the field.  Historical research and analysis of both theory and practical aspects of local music. The students will choose a topic of their own interest, and research will include a field trip.

MU 799 Thesis    12 credits
Students will do research on a topic of their own choice.

Composition of large forms. Computer and electronic devices can be used in these compositions

MU 653 Analytical Studies in Music after 1900 2 (2-0-3) credits Intensive analysis of representative compositions written after 1900, including the techniques and philosophies of each work
 
MU 732 Film Scoring     2 (1-2-5) credits
Basic techniques of composing for film and multimedia, including how to produce the media

MU 734 Advanced Orchestration    2 (2-0-3) credits
Scoring for various ensembles, with emphasis on works for large groups and orchestra.  Study of representative compositions from many periods

MU 798 Thesis     12 credits
Compositions for three different ensembles, each work at least 6 minutes long.  Must submit scores and part to the Music Department.

Study the history and literature of Western music from the Baroque period to the 20th century. Includes the study of form and other elements in the music of the most important composers.

MU 652 Analytical Studies in Music before 1900 2(2-0-3) credits 
Study the form, structures, techniques, harmony, instruments, and specific techniques of composition before 1900.

MU 760 Recital     4(0-8-8) credits
Students will give a public recital, planned, presented, and evaluated, under the guidance of their private teacher.

Students learn the skills and techniques necessary for a high level of interpretation and performance.

MU 614 Teaching Music For Children    2 (2-0-4) credits
Methods of teaching music to children, including the Koday, Dalcroze, Orff, and other well-known methods. The similarities and the differences of these methods will be explored, as well as their effectiveness for teaching Thai Children.

MU 625 Tribal Music of Northern Thailand    2 (2-0-4) credits
Analysis of the music of various ethic minority tribes in Northern Thailand, using musicological and sociological criteria for evaluation.

MU 626 Lanna  Music     2 (2-0-4) credits
Study and research concerning the music of Northern Thailand (formerly the Lanna Kingdom).  Topics: timbre, scales, intervals, melodies, rhythms, and instrumentation. Students will analyze the organization and styles of performing of various instrumental ensembles, with some emphasis on the theories and philosophies of the Lanna Bands.

In-depth study of music, forms, and composers in Europe from ancient times through the 16th century

MU 656 Music in the Baroque Period    2 (2-0-3) credits
In-depth study of Baroque music, including formal analysis and evaluation of compositions of the more famous composers of the 17th and 18th centuries.

MU 657 Music of the Classic Period    2 (2-0-3) credits 
In-depth study of Classical music, especially the works of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.

MU 658 Music of The Romantic Period    2 (2-0-3) credits
In-depth study of the Romantic Era, including, formal analysis, and evaluation of works of the more famous composers of the era.

MU 659 Music of the 20th Century    2 (2-0-4) credits
In-depth study of 20th century compositions, including formal analysis, and study of the theories and works of the more famous 20th century composers.

MU 711 Music Student Development    2 (2-0-4) credits
The characteristic development patterns of students from kindergarten through high school, with emphasis on constructing music activities, suited to music students’ developmental stages, that will encourage concentration, intelligence, social maturity, and positive attitudes. 

MU 733 Advanced Film Scoring     2 (1-2-5) credits
Techniques of producing music to accompany films and media presentations

MU751 Advance Instrumental Conducting    2 (1-2-3) credits
Techniques of conduction, with focus on interpretation of scores with expressiveness.  Students will conduct various instrumental ensembles.

MU 751 Advanced Choral Conducting    2 (1-2-3) credits
Techniques of choral conduction, with focus on interpreting scores with expressiveness.  Students will conduct various choral groups

MU 753 Music Business Management    2 (2-0-4) credits
The process of managing music businesses such as music schools, acoustic rooms, music production studios, and home music studios.  Topics include setting up businesses, seeking investors, marketing products, and paying taxes.

MU 754 Music Personnel Management    2 (2-0-4) credits 
Principles of personnel hiring and development’ contracts for music businesses.

MU 755 Advanced Electro-acoustics    2 (1-2-5) credits
Developing and building electronic sounds, and recording and evaluating compositions for electronic instruments, including computers, synthesizers and other instruments

MU 759  Lecture Recital      2 (0-4-6) credits
Prepare and perform a recital that will including a lecture-analysis of the music performed.  Possible topics: discussion of the characteristics of the music; description of the challenges of playing the music. Must pass a jury examination in advance of public presentation.
